Tiny is an adorable chihuahua who has been a regular visitor of ours.
At one of her visits last year, Tiny was weighed as part of a routine check-up. Worryingly, Tiny weighed in at 9.1kg and had a body condition score of 8/10. An ideal body condition score is about 5/10, and 9.1kg is quite far above the average weight range for her breed.
A good guide for a healthy body score condition is being able to feel, but not see, the individual ribs over the chest without having to use too much pressure with your fingers, and being able to see a waist line. Tiny’s body score was therefore considered overweight.
Tiny’s parents were also concerned about her weight and understood the health risks associated with being overweight. Alongside exceptional management at home, our vet team formulated a diet and exercise plan for Tiny that would get her on track towards a healthy weight goal! Tiny’s parents started recording her weight loss journey on a white board so they could keep track of her development. They measured her food intake daily to ensure she wasn’t being overfed, and she was no longer being fed treats or table scraps.
This strict plan yielded incredible results. Tiny started her journey at 9.1kg, and at her latest check up had worked her way down to 5.6kg!
